Forecasters are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Proceed Amid Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People should to leave additional time for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Activated

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this meant the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
