Trans filmmaker Sam Feder's latest feature "Heightened Scrutiny" presents a compelling two-part viewpoint – both an emotional portrait of a key trans activist and a pointed examination of journalistic coverage surrounding transgender issues.

Judicial Battle at the Highest Court

The film traces ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gets ready for legal presentations in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. This legal battle happened in December 2024, with the court eventually ruling in favor of Tennessee's case, practically enabling bans on treatment for trans young people to remain in effect across numerous US territories.

We produced Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, explained Feder during an interview. By contrast, my previous film Disclosure took me half a decade, so this was quite rushed. Our intention was to generate discussion so people would understand more about the case.

Personal Story Amid Legal Struggle

While Feder presents a extensive examination of how major publications have spread transphobic rhetoric, the film's greatest contribution may be its captivating depiction of Strangio. Typically a reserved lawyer in public settings, Strangio shows his humanity throughout the film.

That was a substantial challenge, to open up aspects of my life to a documentary crew that I had strived to keep private, explained Strangio. Feder said he wanted future generations to know that we fought, to see what was done in support of these struggles for our material survival.

This body art moment is one of my favorites in the movie, explained Strangio. Receiving body art is practically like a contemplative process for me, to be totally engaged in my body and to consider it as a vessel for things that are important to me.

I create films with a purpose, and part of that is picking people who are outstanding and articulate enough to hold the camera, shared Feder. When people ask me what they should dress for an filming, my reply is whatever makes you feel attractive. This is important to me – as trans people, we have difficulties so much with our image.

Legacy and Optimism

One factor that makes Feder's works excel is his clear ability for making his trans participants feel respected, recognized and appreciated. This methodology fosters genuine rapport between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to realize his aim of presenting Strangio as a complete individual and providing a record for future generations of how determinedly he and others have struggled for transgender liberties.

I hope not people to end up in a situation of perpetual despair because of what the law is failing to provide us, explained Strangio. I aim to be in a practice of using the law to reduce harm, but not to transform it into some kind of channel for our freedom possibilities. Official institutions is not going to be the mirror through which we view ourselves. Trans people are that reflection, and it's very crucial that we persist having that dialogue in addition to dialogues about resisting these laws and practices.
