British authorities has included 11 new destinations to its travel warning roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

The expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, in response to several high-profile events including the fatal loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic chemical often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

While it is generated during the creation of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers

Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, stick to well-known venues and refrain from homemade alcohol or free shots," Falconer advised.

"In case something seems unusual, like a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – get medical help immediately."

The complete register of countries listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
