Performer Dame Patricia Routledge, famous for portraying Hyacinth Bucket in the popular TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has left us at the 96, her agent announced.

She also featured in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and portrayed BBC One's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.

"We mournfully announce to share the death of Patricia Routledge, who left this world peacefully in her sleep this morning in the presence of family."

"At the remarkable age of 96, her love for performing and for connecting with live audiences stayed vibrant, just as new generations keep discovering her work through her beloved screen performances."

Her agent continued: "She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers globally."

Decades of Performance

Patricia Routledge was primarily recognized as Hyacinth Bucket - pronounced "bouquet" - a funny persona who embodied the peak of affectation and class consciousness.

"Hyacinth is a terrible snob and I had great fun with the role tremendously," the star said.

Keeping Up Appearances aired from 1990 until 1995, and a year later she was voted the most beloved female performer at the BBC's 60th anniversary awards.

Additionally, she earned praise both live and recorded after launching her acting journey in the theater in the mid-20th century.

Following roles in London theater, she established herself in the US when she was awarded the Tony for leading musical performer on Broadway in New York for the musical Darling of the Day in 1968.

She proved equally skilled at serious drama as she was at musicals and comedy - she performed in Richard III and Henry V at the RSC, then received an Laurence Olivier Award for leading musical actress for the production Candide in the 1980s.

The 1980s also marked her rise as a true national TV star - receiving parts by comedian Victoria Wood in As Seen on TV, and writer Alan Bennett in three of his renowned Talking Heads monologues, including 1988's A Lady of Letters, for which she received a Bafta award nomination.

She earned additional Bafta nods, for the popular sitcom, in 1992 and 93, then starred in the title role as a retired woman on a mission to investigate mysteries in Hetty Wainthropp between 1996 and 98.

She was made an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a Commander of the British Empire in 2004, and a dame in recent years.
